Grow Old Along With Me...

Big B,

You know how everyone has moments in their life when time stands still and the world stops spinning just for a minute? Like, you know life is going on around you, but you just don't register it because you are so caught up in that moment? Most of these seem to happen when there is an accident or a death. I have had these moments many times, but for very different reasons. Every time I gave birth to one of your beautiful children. The night you kissed me for the first time. (Although let's be real, time had to stand still for WAY longer than a moment that night...) And last Friday when I was in the Market in Lancaster. I was rushing along grabbing chicken salad and donuts and rolls. My mom was in the car with our kids and I was hurrying to keep up with Brett. Suddenly, out of the blue, time stopped. I was frozen in place and there were tears in my eyes. I was so so in love with you. All over again.

I saw the stand where the man sells the trivets with the Dutch adages on them. And I immediately saw the one that simply stated "Grow old along with me. The best is yet to be." Of course my mind went back to Utah and to the friends we gave those trivets to. I was caught up in how much those friendships and our jobs and our lives have changed in the last couple of years. I was caught up in all the reasons that we gave those trivets as gifts. I was reminded of Powell, WY, and our Dutch traditions and our stroopwafels. I was overwhelmed entirely by the last 10 years of loving you. Our past has been so amazing and so fulfilling. But that silly little trivet at the silly little stand in that silly little market sent my thoughts spinning towards our past AND towards our future. All at the same time. While the world went on around me.

Brandon, I'm so thankful that you asked me to be your Valentine 10 years ago today. I am so thankful that you brought that HUMONGOUS balloon into Black Angus and bought me Wendy's. And today I want to ask you the hugest favor ever. Grow old along with me? And I will live my life proving to you that the best is yet to be.

Mahal Kita, Mr. Hughes. Always and Forever.

Grow old along with me, The best is yet to be.

When our time has come, We will be as one.
God bless our love, God bless our love.

Grow old along with me, Two branches of one tree.
Face the setting sun, When the day is done.
God bless our love, God bless our love.

Spending our lives together, Man and wife together.
World without end, World without end.

Grow old along with me, Whatever fate decrees.
We will see it through, For our love is true.
God bless our love, God bless our love.
